I have posted this one before, bit some time ago and it tickles my fancy every time I I look at it. It was taken in 1952, when I as a budding photographer went on a holiday to kangaroo Island - a great little holiday spot off the coast of south Australia.
KI as it is affectionately known by locals is a hidden gem, largely untouched by the tourist horde, but still known and treasured by many as the spot to visit if you want a relaxed, informative holiday with great beaches, fabulous wildlife, excellent walking trails, special gourmet food experiences and stunning scenery.
Am I on their payroll? No, it is just a wonderful place to visit and I have featured it a number of times on my blog.
Anyhow, when we were touring in 1952, the bus broke down and this obnoxious little learner photographer snapped this scene with her trusty Box Brownie(which I still have). Talk about too many cooks and that broth!!
Being not only an obnoxious 12 year old, but also vain (as only a pre-adolescent can be), I always thought I looked pretty gorgeous in this shot taken by one of the boys, son of the owners at the seaside hotel at which we stayed on KI. (Bernie was his name - my first foray into unrequited love). The poor dupe is my younger brother.
But I digress - pleasantly because at the grand old age of 75, I look back at those memories with fondness.
Liz Needle - linking with "Sepia Saturday".
Liz, You do look very fetching leaning against those rocks and that's a great shot of the many men fixing the bus. Your link on the Sepia Saturday page took me to a "blue monday" page with a bird. I clicked the header to get here. Glad I did.
ReplyDeleteLooking at that first photo again, I think the woman on the side wearing the checked dress actually has the problem figured out.
ReplyDeleteI was taken with the woman in slacks on the left conferring with the men. Most unusual in those days both for the slacks and the involvement in men's matters.
DeleteKangaroo Island sounds like a great vacation spot. With a name like that, I was expecting to see some kangaroos around the bus.
ReplyDeleteKris is right, I had to scroll through your week of posts to get to this delightful one, but not everyone will be as patient. If you want to put the correct link in Mr Linky I’ll ‘admin out’ the incorrect one for you. I’m so pleased that you snapped the group of ‘helpful’ pasengers; you could write story about this scene.
ReplyDeleteThanks Nell. I have put the correct one in now.
DeleteHello Liz, you were a proper stunner! Love the photo of the broken-down bus and your description of Kangaroo Island.
ReplyDeleteWe considered visiting Kangarro Island the last time we were in Australia but decided against it on the basis that it would be overrun with tourists (like us), wish we had gone now! We might be over again in a year or two so will have to do it then. Our son lives in Adelaide and we were intending to visit him this year but he and his family are now visiting us, so we will put our trip off for a while.
There have never bee too many tourists when we've been there - but we don't tend to go in summer when I am sure they'd abound.
DeleteI'm glad you were an obnoxious little photographer. Great shot. Those wonderful days of pre-computerized cars when commonsense could often provide a temporary solution to a break-down. Love the women standing off to the side, keeping out of the way.
ReplyDeletethese are wonderful....lucky you to have a camera at that age, too.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny - looking back on old photographs. Sometimes I don't remember at all what I was doing when a picture was taken. Other times, the photo will take me right back there & I remember clearly what I was doing & what happened before & after the shot was taken even though, like yours, it was taken 60 or 70 years ago. The way the mind works is a real mystery! Great pictures!
ReplyDeleteWe enjoyed a few days on KI a couple of years ago. I love your shirred costume!

ReplyDeleteKI is on my bucket list. One day...
ReplyDeleteI don't think there was much traffic on that road!!
I have relatives who live on Kangaroo Island and have had intentions of visiting for many years but haven't managed to get there. I really need to make a date and just do it!
