Garden Visitor

The dogs started barking madly this morning and we raced outside as it is snake season and they usually warn us about snakes.  But we found they had put this fellow up a flowering gum tree and were letting us know that we had a visitor. We locked to dogs inside and let him be.

This is the first koala we have seen in the garden for about 18 months - we used to have several regulars. We do hear them quite often in the trees across the road. I think possibly the dogs scare them off and our neighbour across the road has planted a lot of food trees which are now mature. Koalas in a small area can do a lot of damage to the trees they prefer and we have one dead Eucalypt to bear proof of it.

They look very cute and cuddly, but they have long, strong claws and can give the dogs a good belting if they are cornered.

We checked on our guest about 30 minutes later, but he had moved on.

  1. Liz, now this is a sight that we never see in our garden. I just showed this to my little granddaughters, they loved the koala. I invite you to return to Tuesday's Treasure!

  6. Oh wow what an awesome visitor, I assume you must live in a bush area Liz. I wish we had Koalas here in Tassie. We live in town so we never even get so much as a Possum let alone anything else. Our only garden visitors are birds & the occasional neighbourhood cat.

As for snake season, we had a tiger snake in the backyard today. Would have preferred the koala :-)
